Summary
The sensitivity to Geranium Oil (Avicenna-Oil, Wrocław) 64 strains of yeastlike fungi isolated from patients with candidosis of oral cavity. The susceptibility (MIC) of Candida strains was determined by means of plate dilution technique in Sabouraud agar. The inoculum contained 106 CFU per spot. The agar plates containing various oil concentrations and oil-free agar plates (the fungi strains growth control) were inoculated using a Steers replicator. Incubation the plates was conducted in aerobic conditions, in 37°C for 24 hours. The MIC was defined as the lowest concentrations of essential oil complete inhibiting the growth of the Candida strains. The results indicated, that Geranium Oil was very active against the tested yeastlike fungi. The strains belonging to the genus of Candida humicola was the most susceptible to Geranium Oil (MIC = 0.25 mg/ml). The strains of Candida albicans, C. kefyr and C. guilliermondii were highly sensitive to essential oil. On the range of concentrations 0.25 mg/ml Geranium Oil inhibited growth of 74, 71 and 67% of the strains respectively. Among Candida species examined, Candida krusei was the lowest sensitive to tested oil (MIC = 0.5 mg/ml). The Geranium Oil showed good antifungal activity vs. the Candida strains (MIC in ranges 0.25-0.5 mg/ml).
