Summary
Juniperus communis L. (common juniper) is an aromatic plant, which is widely used in pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industry. Juniper cone-berries (Baccae Juniperi, Juniperi fructus) are the source of essential oil and the subjects of Pharmacopoeial monographs. The oil is also present in juniper needles and stems, but to a smaller extent. Monoterpene fraction constitutes for 60-80% of the oil, while the sesquiterpene content rarely exceeds 10%. The cone-berries and the oil itself are stated to posses diuretic, antispetic, carminative, stomachic and antirheumatic properties.
