Summary
Little is known about Buddleja davidii (butterfly bush) in Poland. Although the plant is native to China it has become widely naturalized in temperate regions of the world and cultivated as an ornamental plant that attracts butterflies. The genus Buddleja comprises around 100 species and now belongs to separated family Buddlejaceae. Buddleja is widely spread in folk medicine for the treatment of liver aliments, wounds, ulcers, skin and eye afflictions. Some of the uses are explained on the basis of the known biological activity and structure of some constituents present such as: terpenes – iridoids and their glycoside derivatives, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenoid saponins, phenylpropanoid glycosides and flavonoids. These compounds acts as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-hepatotoxic reagents. It is also documented that they are good antioxidants and have photoprotective properties. For these reasons Buddleja davidii has not only pharmacological but also some cosmetic applications in anti-ageing, healing and protective care formulations
