Summary
Introduction:One of the Basic rights of a patient and a human being is the one related to maintaining one´s dignity during medical procedures. Dignity is a top human value. The laws referring to respecting a patient´s right to be treated with dignity while undergoing a course of treatment in hospital have been included in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, as well as in the law on the National Health Service, on the profession of a medical doctor and dentist, the ethical code and in the civil code.
Objectives: The objective of this research was to become familiar with patients´ opinions about respecting the patient´s right to dignity by the medical staff while administering medical procedures.
Material and methods: A group of 700 patients staying in Pirogow Hospital in Lodz was requested to fill in a survey prepared by the authors, in which instruments were applied to examine patients´ opinions about prenatal examinations in pregnant women. The necessary calculations were done by means by followings packets: STATISTICA 7.1 and EXCEL 2008.
Results: The analysis of the results of this research reveals that 686 (98%) respondents claim that their right to dignity during medical procedures was respected by the medical staff. Among 700 respondents 14 (2%) thought otherwise.
Conclusions: The results of the research demonstrate clearly that the medical staff recognized the patient´s right to maintain dignity while administering medical procedures. Each employee of the National Health Service must respect the right, as it is one of the most important human rights. The legal consequences following if this right should be infringed upon by medical staff have been codified in the civil code.
