Summary
Glaucoma is a dangerous, chronic, progressive eye disease. Despite the treatment glaucoma can cause blindness. One of the most frequent type of glaucoma is primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Its first symptoms are for the patient very often difficult to notice.
The aim of this study was to present current methods of primary open angle glaucoma prophylaxis.
Risk factors of glaucoma can be divided to modified and unmodified.
Unmodified risk factors are: age over forty, female, race black and genetics factors.
An important role has also myocardial, infarction, stroke, Reynaud´s disease or diabetes and hypermetropia and high myopia. Modified risk factors are vascular factors like: night hypotony, high or low blood pressure and flow blood velocity.
Modified eye risk factors are: high intraocular pressure and flow blood velocity in ophthalmic artery. Very important role have also healthy lifestyle like: overweight and obesity, smoking cigarettes, irrational nutrition, small physical activity.
Suitable prophylaxis is important in limitation of progression and complication of glaucoma. In the whole process of glaucoma prevention, diagnosis and therapy an important role has also cooperation between patient doctor and nurse.
Key words: glaucoma, factors, prevention
