Summary
The arrival of a person in a hospital usually has a negative emotional impact. Patients find themselves in a new and unfamiliar environment. Illness and hospitalization may bring out fears and loss of confidence in ones health. Patients are afraid of procedures, pain and death. Their feeling of personal safety is usually diminished.
The article discusses the treatment of patients by some hospital employees and the possible negative psychological effects that may occur. The paper illustrates the role nurses play in problem solving during the early stages of a new patients stay at the hospital and during her/his adaptation to the new environment, or preparation to discharge/transfer to yet another environment.
Studies done on patients´ expectation from nurses at the time of arrival in a hospital show that patients expect nurses to be welcoming and provide skilled help, as well as fast relief from unwanted symptoms, information, assurance of safety, fast and reliable check-in, mature and proper service, and assurance of intimacy.
