Burnout among health care professionals

Summary
Medical doctor´s and nurse´s work with and for people may become a source of satisfaction, energy and professional fulfillment. However, it sometimes may lead to discouragement, feeling of burden and lack of satisfaction, which mean professional burnout.
Ch. Maslach defined burnout as an emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and decreased sense of personal achievements, which may occur among individuals working with other people in a certain way. It is a very disadvantageous phenomenon, and fighting it requires effective diagnostic and measuring methods.
Aim
The main objective of this study was to describe the level of professional burnout among 260 health care professionals, and its relation with their profession, and also represented specialty.
Material and methods
The study took place between 2006 and 2007 and it included 71 clinicians and 189 nurses working in hospital units and outpatient clinics in southern Poland. Participants were divided into three subgroups according to their working site i.e. surgical units, non-surgical, and general practitioners. The following study methods were used; Maslach Burnout Inventory MBI and Sociodemographic Questionnaire.
Results
It was found that represented specialty predicted professional burnout rather than other profession. The analysis proved significant differences in the measurement of burnout level in relation to specialty while no significant differences were observed between professional groups i.e. clinicians and nurses.
Conclusions
The analysis of differences in given burnout dimensions showed that non-operative group (doctors) and primary heath care group (nurses) had the best results.
