The influence of magnetotherapy on pain symptoms in patients with chronic lower back pain

Summary
Aim
The aim of this study was to test the effect of magnetotherapy on pain symptoms and range of motion in patients with chronic lower back pain (osteoarthritis).
Material and methods
The study group included 16 participants with a mean age of 61.3 ± 9.3 (range 50-78 years). Following parameters were estimated in the all analyzed patients: subjective evaluation of pain (VAS), appearance of pain symptoms and range of motion in selected movements. Physical examination contained: quadrant test, lumbar extension, lateral flexion, lumbar flexion, straight-leg-raising test and Laseque test.
Magnetotherapy in the form of magnetic field induction (10 microT, frequency – 25 Hz, rectangular wave) was applied for 10 minutes. This procedure was repeated for 10 days with weekends breaks. After completion, subjective evaluation of pain, appearance of pain symptoms and range of motion were estimated again.
Results
The decrease of pain (VAS) in all patients was observed (mean 3.3 ± 2.3). There was no difference between 50-60 years age group (n=10) and those in the 60 years and older age group (n=6) in terms of degree of improvement after the magnetotherapy. Quadrant test was painless in all studied patients and this was better in comparison with the assessment before magnetotherapy (left p<0.01, right p<0.05). Moreover all patients, also showed the improvement of the range of motion in all analyzed tests.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the study proves that magnetotherapy exerts a positive effect on patients with chronic lower back pain. Advanced age is not a contraindication for this kind of therapy.
