Summary
Carcinomas of the vagina are uncommon tumors, comprising 1% to 2% of all gynecologic malignancies (1, 4, 8, 13). Vaginal cancer has a peak incidence between 60 and 70 years of age, however, cancer developed on the base of HPV infection is noted in younger age groups. About 10% of patients are younger than 50 years old (5).Radiation therapy is the standard treatment for patients with vaginal carcinoma, however, in early, selected cases, surgical treatment is performed (13).
Regardless of the treatment modality, the recognized prognostic factors in vaginal cancer are: the stage of the disease (8, 9), the location of the primary lesion, age (6), the differentiation and histopatological type of the tumor, which sometimes are the subject of discussion (8, 14).
The 5-year survival for patients with vaginal cancer, in respect of the stage of the disease, according to the literature data, are: I – 73-82%, II – 53-58%, III, IV – 36% (4, 9, 12).
Key words: vaginal cancer, diagnostics, treatment, surgery, radiotherapy
